Welcome to The Redstar Perspective! Karibu Sana means “Very Welcome” in Swahili, and I hope that’s how you’ll feel as I share my thoughts and observations with you on this site. Please feel free to make liberal use of the “Comments” feature - I love to argue, heckle and be provoked. Troublemakers welcome!
I am a PhD student in urban planning, with working class urban roots, a sardonic sense of humor, a business degree and a conflicted attitude about capitalism. This site emphasizes my experience and research as an urban planner and sociologist, especially:
- working in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina and in Lower Manhattan after 9/11;
- disasters;
- gender, feminism, race, and class;
- cities;
- urban politics;
- and public housing.
It dabbles in current events and politics, includes an occasional book review, often invokes my Irish-Catholic roots and branches (NYC, honorary MOT, E. Africa), and takes you with me on my travels around the world.
My writings will reflect my constant categorizing and sensemaking of my varied experiences (And click here for more info on my blogroll organization). Hopefully I’ll make you laugh and occasionally wince in the process. And leave you with something to think about.
Thanks for visiting. Tell a friend.
